In my recent work I have been using a method of scoring oil paint to reveal an underpainting of pastel on panel. The scored lines follow serpentine paths which run parallel to one another and produce an appearance of waves or a topographic surface. This slow and deliberate process is counteracted by frequent and hasty erasures and reworking, often many times over. My painting is driven by a generative tension between will and whim. The revisions maneuver the painting away from the intentional and towards the unpredictable. It is a negotiation between my initial aims and the ways that material, colour, form, and shifting impulses play out in reality.
